Education & Experience

Stephen graduated from the University of Newcastle in 1992 with a Bachelor of Architecture (Hons II).

After graduating, Stephen started working with Crone Architects in Sydney.

At Crone, he was part of a large team involved in the design, documentation and contract administration of high-rise apartment and office buildings including but not limited to:

  • Highgate at 127 Kent Street
  • Observatory Tower at 168 Kent Street
  • Market City (Paddy’s Markets) 400 George Street

After five years with Crone Architects, Stephen wanted to return to the attractive lifestyle the Hunter Region has to offer, so in 1997 Stephen took up a position with a Seymour Lawler Architects, a mid-sized practice in Charlestown.

As a Project Architect, Stephen worked closely with the Directors and managed projects from the initial design stages through to documentation and completion. The type and scale of projects varied from small house renovations to new homes, townhouses, apartment buildings, university buildings, and commercial fit-outs.

Mark Lawler Architects

Stephen became a director with Mark Lawler Architects in 2013 following the dissolution of the previous partnership.

In 2019, Stephen maintains his directorial role and has become a shared owner of the business, working closely with fellow architect, Mark Lawler, to oversee the operations of their practice.

Stephen’s experience in the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter Region over the last twenty years have enhanced his knowledge of a wide range of projects and he has developed a broad skill set in design and documentation, relevant to the local area.

His understanding of design relevance, proportion, aesthetics, structural and constructional practicality, and the local building economy is applied to every project regardless of size and scale.
